Services for Medical Professionals

If you are an NHS professional with any private practice or are working through a company/partnership you have come to the right place for help and guidance with all your accounting and tax needs.

At Catherine Smith Accountants, we have an inside knowledge of all the accounting requirements of medical professionals. It helps that our founder is married to an NHS surgeon who went through Modernising Medical Careers and the changes to the pension rules in real time!!

How we help medical professionals

We have extensive knowledge of helping medical professionals with both private practice and those headache inducing pensions. We will also keep you compliant with all the necessary accounting and tax changes that come in regularly.

Specific areas we can assist you with include:

  • Ensuring your tax code is correct so that you are paying the correct amount of tax (and helping you to reclaim a tax refund if you have overpaid).

  • Identifying the expenses and allowances you can claim even if your only income is NHS, to help reduce your tax bill.

  • Helping you to make efficient tax planning arrangements when setting up and running your private practice, to avoid paying large tax bills.

  • Ensuring that you declare any monies received for producing cremation and similar certificates on your tax return.

  • Sorting out any queries with HMRC, so you can focus on patient care while we spend hours on the phone or web chat with HMRC on your behalf.

  • Chasing the relevant organisations to ensure you receive your pension statements and forecasts on a timely basis.

If you haven’t been submitting tax returns, we can liaise with HMRC on your behalf. In doing so we can get your tax position up to date, help reduce any late filing penalties, and if required, agree a time to pay schedule with HMRC that will allow you to pay off your tax bill over a period of time.

Making Tax Digital and the medical profession

In 2019, HMRC introduced Making Tax Digital (MTD), its scheme to digitise the tax system in the UK. Initially this was rolled out to VAT registered businesses, but from April 2026 or 27 MTD for Income Tax is being introduced to most others with non PAYE income above £30,000. Clearly this will have a direct impact on self-employed medical professionals or those with significant AirBnB or other rental income.

We have extensive knowledge of MTD and will be helping our clients to transition to this new quarterly filing requirement. We can also provide support and training in setting up your accounting to make this easy.
